Have you ever wondered which is more dangerous: being bitten by a venomous snake or having a work accident?
Although it seems that being bitten by a snake is more risky, the truth is that the number of accidents at work is much higher than the number of incidents involving venomous snakes.
Based on the news published by KAISER+KRAFT, the three most common types of accidents in industrial companies were identified and how we can avoid them.
According to the annual report by ACT – Portuguese Authority for Working Conditions -, the number of accidents at work in Portugal has been decreasing in recent years. In 2020, around 63,000 accidents were recorded, which represents a 22% reduction compared to the previous year.
The meaning of these numbers conveys the message that we are moving in the right direction. However, it also means that a “little distraction” can turn into a major disaster.
The most common types of accidents and countermeasures
Accidents happen for many reasons! In the absence of requested work conditions or lack of attention, the ideal combination occurs for accidents to happen.
Stumble, Slip and Fall
The most frequent accidents at work are tripping, slipping and falling. This type of accident represents a third of all accidents at work and can have very serious consequences, in addition to having negative financial consequences.
To avoid accidents of this type, one should only use suitable work equipment for the specific activity. In case the floors are slippery, it is advisable to mark the non-slip floor, a safety measure that minimizes risks and organizes the space by work areas.
Welding, Cutting and Casting
The second most frequent cause of accidents is the incorrect use of industrial tools and machines. In industrial processes, such as welding, cutting or melting the raw material, serious situations can occur.
As a prevention measure, employees must be properly equipped and have the necessary knowledge to handle equipment safely.
Drive, Honk and Brake
Accidents with vehicles circulating inside the logistics warehouse, such as forklifts or pallet trucks, are the third most common cause of accidents at work.
Forklift trucks, pallet trucks or stackers can cause serious injuries if they collide with equipment or people. To avoid these situations, it is essential to delineate pedestrian crossing zones and vehicle crossing zones. To anticipate possible accidents, it is also advisable to install safety barriers, with the aim of creating safe areas, protecting employees, structural elements and equipment.
R-PROTECTION works with this purpose and offers technical assistance to industrial companies, through the installation of safety barriers, pavement marking and emergency signaling/lighting. We can be the safe partner!
